Both my switches are toast so I bought a new set. I'm just wondering if there is a way to replace these things without pulling all the bellows off. I have to pull the outdrive to replace my shift cable bellow anyway and thought nows the time to do it if it can be done.

As long as you can reach what has to be removed and replaced without removing the bellows, sure, why not.

Its no problem to to cut the wire and use splicing sleeve. The ones that have (hot melt?) in them they are 100% water proof. I have never had any problems with them.

I replaced my switches/sender that way. . . Replaced the wires and all, feed them back through the transom plate.

It is sort of like orthoscopic surgery, but do-able

I think he meant he replaced his without removing the bellows. Didn't your new units come with wires on them? If they did ,do it the right way with out cutting wires. By the way what are you working on?

When i do it i cut the wires as close to the old unit as possible.
Then when you peal of isolation you might to have to cut some more to get to good copper.
on the new sender/limit i cut so i have about 3 - 3?" of cable then just splice them toghether, uses the heatgun or a lihgter to shrink the tubes around the cable and get the hot melt out.

Hook the new wires to the old ones and use them to pull new wires through the transom.

You can't do that... The old ones MUST come out to the back and the new ones MUST go in from the back... You need to attach a pull cord to the connectors on the ends of the cable of the old ones and pull it through.... Then attach the connectors of the new ones to that cord and then pull them in...

After looking at the service manual Chris is correct in the direction of the cables entering....also it shows a clamp on the transom assy...

I guess cutting the wires, solder them together with rosin core solder, coat with dielectric grease and shrink tube them would be another option?
