Replacing trim motor

I have a 1989 Stratos 179V with a Mercury Mariner Magnum 150 hp that has a dead trim motor. The hidden screw looks to be inaccessible without lifting the motor and removing the bracket from the transom. Does anyone have a trick that would help me avoid that? I'm not looking forward to that.

Also, I ordered a motor that I was told was the replacement, but it is a 2-wire. The one on the boat currently is a 3-wire. Does anyone know where I can look up what motor it should be? For that matter, any source of documentation on the motor, the tilt/trim and anything else would be appreciated!

You probably need to remove one of the trim brackets to get to that rear screw. That is much better then lifting the motor.

So unbolt the PTT cylinders from the trim bracket (3 bolts?). Remove the large nut on the tilt tube and the two transom bolts, and slide the transom bracket onto the steering cable.

The newer PTT motors are 2 wire. You can get a new wiring harness with the new PTT motor, or separate (Flea Bay has them for $50). It will have 2 relays to replace your two solenoids.

Some of those PTT motors have an adaptor to connect the armature to the pump. Try not to lose it, when you open the box.

Thanks for the reply! If I'm understanding you correctly I'm going to need to support the motor's weight while I do this, correct?

I never did support the motor in any significant way. I did stick a board under the center of the motor, but my engine is bolted on above the transom. if yours sits on the transom, it is probably supported adequately.
