Replacing trebble hooks - hardware?

I have some older lures I am working on here. I bought several sizes of replacement trebble hooks, from size 14 to 6.

My question is on hardware to attach the hooks to the lures. Since the hooks have to be cut off in most cases (hooks were built in to the lure when it was made) it is required to use a split ring or other type of connecting device because the loop on the hook and lure is closed and there is no way to open either one now.

The smallest split rings I have are size 2 but I am still seeing that the hooks are interfering with each other. Is there anything smaller that I can use that will restrict the movement of the hooks? The problem is when I cast a lot of times the hooks foul up and catch each other.

I have used heat shrink tube slid onto the hook before attaching to the split ring,...Then slide the heat shrink tube up over the spit ring and heat the tube to shrink it,.......................

Works good enough, And it's cheap.

That is a thought. Though, I was trying to come up with something that would keep the hooks closer to the attaching loops on the lures. The heat shrink would keep the hook/split ring orientation from changing, though, so that may help, just at the same distance.

I think the best fix is to find some treble hooks with a shorter shank...........only needs to be just as short to make up the diameter of the additional ring.

The HS tubing is a good idea, but I would think that would restrict the movement too much....... maybe try a piece of surgical tubing...You really only need to restrict the movement of one hook.
