You do not need to pull the powerhead from the shaft (if that is what you mean?). However, you will need to remove the cylinder block cover and take the outer water jacket with it. You cant remove the water jacket alone because the cover latch gets in the way.
So remove the cylinder head cover, then the water jacket cover to access the thermostat. Ideally you should replace the cylinder head gasket and water jacket cover gasket with new ones, plus put in the new thermostat with new thermostat gasket/washer.
It's a bit tricky getting to some of the bolts on the cylinder head, and especially tightening them up again on re-assembly, but it can be done and saves you having to pull the whole engine block off the shaft.
