The gimble housing on my '74 225s has damage at the lip where the driveshaft bellows attaches. I would like to replace this. E-bay has many to choose from. the engine is a 302 ford V8. attached to a Type 1 drive. What will swap? All ideas are welcome. thanks...sl

hello
try to find the original. the one with 6 ears for the mountingbolts. on the later 70's and early 80s the gimbal mounts use bolts and not pins. the original fwd ennty cable is NLA and any replacement shift cable will require a non-tapered 1/4 pipe tap. the instructions and tap part number is in the drive manual for mid 80's mercs.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks rodbolt,
you wrote, "the original fwd ennty cable"...

Is the word 'ennty' a misspelled word? Might you have ment 'entry'?

And about the gimble housing, are bolts preferred over the pins?

thanks again...sl

Ayah.... It's an Improvement Update, ei.Latest Version so to speak..... .......
It means the "Special" Merc. Tool required is a Glorified Allenwrench, instead of a Slidehammer.........

The difference in the Lower Shift Cable is to make replacement Much Easier........
As Stated by rodbolt, The older style cable is "NLA", but the update is Reasonably Easy,+ done to Any drive needing a new cable........

I'm not Sure just how new a gimbel housing you can hang on the Mod.1 transom assembley.........
In other words, I'm not sure an Alpha 1 will work on the Mod.1........
I've never had both of them side by side,
But,
I Think it Might...

hello
yep caint spell much niether.
the early mercs used a pin to hinge the gimbal the later used a hinge bolt. the two dont interchange. the early used a fwd entry cable the later an aft entry.(spelled it right twice:))
some used a 5/8ths water nipple and others used a 3/4". try to find one that closely matches yours.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Replacing the gimble housing, what swaps?

Bondo and rodbolt, thanks for your responses. This clears up alot.
Upon further inspection, what is damaged is the steel flange that the bellows clamps to, at first glance I thought it to be part of the casting. This is the flange that is adjacent to and encircles the gimble bearing. It is aprox.
4 1/2" in diamater and 1/2" wide.
Q). Is this flange replaceable, as with the gimble bearing "carrier"? ...sl

P.S. Don't woory two muchabout your spelling. I am not an English teacher...

Is the part you're talking about a part of the Transom Shield ?? Not the Gimbel Housing...????
In other words,
The Boat end of the Bellows ????

I wandered out to the wellhouse earlier today after reading your thread........
Shoot me an email with Outdrive in the topic line................... ;)

Fishermark, Good morning.
Thanks for the information on the
Gimble Housing repair kit. I performed an internet search and wasn't able to come up with such an item. Perhaps I should have try other search engines. However, you, and your previous posts explained the kit very well, with pictures too!
Have you installed this kit as of yet?
At MY FIRST glance, it looks like a gret attempt but weak. I haven't torn down anything as of yet. Looks like I'am about to learn about transom/gimble assemblys, Ha ha.
Your damaged area was at the top, mine is at the bottom.
Am going to try to attach a picture. but I'll post this first...sl

I decided against the kit. I couldn't see paying that much for what you get. Here is the link to the actual web site: repair kit

I wound up buying a complete transom assembly off of ebay. For what it's worth, I'm glad I did. I was able to find a good used assembly from somewhere in Michigan if memory serves me correctly, (somewhere up "North" - anywhere north of Northern Florida is all the same to me! :D ). It was used but like new - absolutely no corrosion or wear.

I never did get any response from anyone who had actually used the kit and I didn't want to be the guinea pig! :p

Of course, I was looking for a more readily available alpha 1 as opposed to the earlier model.

Re: Replacing the gimble housing, what swaps?

thanks Fishermark,
I'll know a bit more when I pull this one out. Not knowing, but it would seem that this steel ring should be rivited to the aluminum transom housing, that would make for an easy replacement. This is a project/hobby to help me deal with all of the other projects I have going! I am suppose to be remodeling our kitchen, after I finish the bathrooms, so we can sell this place and move to our other property where we are building a house. I better hurry cause I just got back from an extended vacation/road trip and go back to work in a week Thanks for your input, BTW, how much was this repair kit?...sl
