Has any one else replaced a clutch in an f-150? Particularly in the model year range of 97-03.

I have a 1999 F-150 and I am going to start the tear down to replace the clutch this weekend and hopefully wrap up the project next weekend.

The repair manual makes it look really bad.

Just do yourself a favor and install a NEW, not rebuilt, clutch assembly. The assembly should include clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and a pilot bearing/bushing. Also change the clutch slave cylinder. If you don't it will be leaking in a few weeks, nature of the beast.

Some of the big discout auto stores will loan you the tool to remove/replace the pilot bearing/bushing.

I agree. Get the NEW clutch assembly. You really need to get the puller to get the pilot bearing out. You don't want to try without it! Make sure your new clutch assembly kit has the line up tool. Most of them come with it, but if not--it doesn't cost that much.

Re: Replacing the clutch in an F-150

I just had my nephew do the clutch on my '84 F250... I did help with raising that beast back up into the hole, he did the rest.

I first went to Autozone to get the parts, it was an imcomplete kit, they didn't have the alignment tool...

So I went to Napa and got a kit that had EVERYTHING in it, was very much worth the extra couple bucks.

Since this truck gets about 4,000 miles a year, I didn't even bother with turning the flywheel... Because of this, I get some chatter when trying to back up under load. So turn your flywheel :)

Turn as in Machining it?

Yeah, just like a break rotor. Some autoparts stores can still do it.

Got the tranny down, clutch and flywheel off. And am waiting on parts. I am going to get the flywheel turned and am going to replace the rear main seal while its torn down that far.

Good idea on the seal, I didn't think of that part of it until after we were ready to re-assemble. Oh well, if it leaks, I'll park in in the gravel.

I had to cut the exhaust to get the tranny down. I couldn't seperate it from the manifolds, so I had to cut out a piece of the pipe. Once I get the tranny done I will reattach the clamp I took off and have a shop weld it back together.

Keep the clutch clean when you are installing it. Grease or oil spots on the friction surfaces will make it grab, chatter, ect. Having a can of Brakleen on hand is a good idea.

Total work load all depends on if its 4x4 or not. If so, its twice as much work since you not only have to drop the transmission, but the transfer case as well. I did my 4x4 1991 Ranger a year ago. It sucked but saved me allot of $$$.

Remove all drive shafts and u-joints
Unbolt transmission housing
Unbolt transfer case (or drop the whole package; tranny and transfer case if you can slide it all out in one piece. I could but you may not be able to since its all larger)
Unbolt cross member
Slide transmission and or transfer case to rear of truck
Drop transmission and or transfer case

Replace clutch. And yes always buy new.

Hardest part is the disassembly. Don't even bother without air guns.

Got it all replaced. It all works good but, the truck still has issues. I think it must be in the iginition, I know its not the clutch now. The clutch was very worn and the flywheel had signs of slippage. The throw out beaing was in horrible shape.
