My steering is not at the point where I have to strain to hold it, and turning to port is damn hard.

I have a Baja Sunsport 186 with a Yamaha ProV 150,
both 1988. I would like to get a steering system which will turn easily to both sides.

From what I can tell, my options are rotory, rack and pinion, and hydrolic. Rotory and rack and pinion seem to come in single cable and double cable types.

I'm a little confused on the difference between rotory and rack and pinion. Does this refer to the mechanism at the helm, or at the motor?

What type reduce loads the most? I would rather not spend the money for a hydrolic system, so I am mostly trying to decide between rotory, rank 'n pinion, and single vs. double cable systems.

Am I limited by the motor, side if motor well, boat, etc?

Thanks!

--------------------
Brian Atkins

batkins,

For starters, are you sure your trim tab is adjusted properly? Turn the trailing edge toward the pull.

Next, in my opinion, rack and rotary each work as well as the other. The rack, takes up more space.

With a 150, I would prefer a dual cable system. Both rack and rotary are available as NFB "no feedback".

No question, hydraulic is the best, no feedback at all.

batkins, I have a Team Spirit bass boat with same motor. I would suggest go dual cable, they are rated for V6 and above 50mph speed. Something you don't want is steering to give up when you are flying at full speed (brrr!!!).
Rack system would be better if you have room underneath dash, but rotary works fine too. The difference between rack and rotary is at the helm. Rack is flat and long where a gear moves your cable, rotary takes more room, and the cable wraps around your helm. They all connect to your motor the same way.

Check this site, it's very helpful

http://www.tfxmarine.com/Marine/default.asp?ID=48
