After reading the numerous posts regarding stators I have reason to believe my stator needs replacing due to the following: battery no longer charges and motor will not idle. My question is can the stator be replaced while the boat is still in the water?<br /><br />'88 Mercury <br />60hp<br />sn OB308702

Have you checked your rectifier? That is usually the first to go.

I would want to do this on shore because of the number of parts that need to be removed, but yes it could be done in the water.<br /><br />DHP

A bad rectifier will prevent proper charging. I think I've seen posts of rectifiers causing other problems as well, not sure if poor idling is one of them. However, to check if it is not charging due to the stator, check for continunity between the two yellow wires.
