I would like to replace the shift lever on my Tohatsu 6hp 2006. I've already bought the new part. From looking at the engine, it is not exactly clear how to replace this. I'm not that interested in purchasing the manual since I will be selling the engine.

Remove the powerhead, replace the lever, and reinstall the powerhead.

Paul, what about replacing the shift lever on a Tohatsu 3.5, 2 strokes engine, the same, must remove complete engine head to replace ?

Six 6mm bolts, with 10mm heads. 10 minutes. 20 if you are having coffee at the same time.

Add 10 more while busting the owner for his stupidity breaking a hard plastic lever while trying to shift forward with engine off :D

Yours broke going into forward with the engine off? That's odd. My 6 HP goes into forward (reverse as well) fairly easily with the engine off.

The shifter on any outboard should not be operated with the motor off. That's because it has a mechanical clutch dog, and the shaft must be turning in order for the ears to align. It's OK to pull the shifter into neutral, but there's no guarantee that the clutch is aligned to allow it to go into gear when the motor is not running.

A more common reason that the shift lever gets broken is that someone mistakenly lays the motor down on the shifter side and snaps it off.

Paul, when you remove head to change shift lever, asume will need to change the base gasket located under the engine body, correct ? Or will depend on it's thickness and how well it's solded or not to the base, being a new engine with very low hours, probably gasket will go out complete.

Do you have to remove tail, or just disconnect the shift rod mechanism located under the black round rubber seal in middle tail to take head off ?

A new base gasket is cheap, so have one on hand. Sometimes you get lucky and the old one comes apart cleanly -- so can be re-used. Just disconnect the shift rod through the grommet hole in the lower exhaust housing. No need to drop the LU.

Are the bolts located at the bottom of the powerhead? Is it okay to tilt it upside down to remove the bolts? Thank you so much.

You do realize this post is almost a year old, right? The procedure is in your factory service manual, available from any dealer, including me. If you invert a 4 stroke, any oil in the crankcase will leak out.
