volvo penta 5.0 GL-H and SX-A outdrive.

See attached picture. I noticed there is a tiny hole in this rubber exhaust bellow that extends down from the exhaust elbow. Water doesnt necessarily spray out, but it does leak, and a mechanic mentioned I should change it out before it ruptures and causes a headache. I ordered the part thru iboats. I've never replaced one of these before, so how much disassembly is necessary to get it off? Does the riser and elbow need to come off or can I manage to get it off after loosening the clamps and that's it?

In the future, is there something that causes this, or is it just a 6 yr old rubber piece cracking? I haven't read anything about taking care of them.

I usually just take all the clamps loose, push the bellows down on the Y pipe until it clears the elbow and then push the elbow back and off the riser. Put the new bellows down the Y pipe and reinstall the elbow, pull up the bellows and put the clamps back on.

A little spray lube around the bellows and pipe makes the job of sliding the bellows a lot easier.

Thanks Don. This technique and a couple squirts of lube made it a 15 minute job.
