Does anyone know if there is a trick to reinstalling the lower unit on a 99 150 vmax? I took it to a local shop and after reordering the lower unit 3 times we still can't get the unit to go in alll the way. It stops about 1/2-3/4" short. I'm cartain that the shaft length is correct ..any ideas??

check that the oring in the female portion of the shift shaft isnt out of place.
check that no grease is on top of the drive shaft splines. make sure your doing this with both shafts in the correct N position.
make sure the shift shafts are lining up and have someone turn the flywheel by hand to insure your drive splines are lining up with the crank splines.

Thanks for the advise Rodbolt, i'll give that a try. Just one other question that may sound stupid but... How do I know if the mid section is in the correct shift position? The old L/U was ripped of while driving so will just moving the contols to nuetral put it in the right position or do I have manually do it?

thats a horse of a different color.
the shift shaft or something else may be bent.
only careful inspection will reveal that.
