Re: replacing impeller

Go to Mercury's web site, go to parts express, and you can look at your engine if you enter the serial number there.

The fins go folded so that they are flowing in the direction of rotation. In other words, you will damage them if they have to spring the opposite way in the house, when you first start the motor after replacement.

Don't have a picture, maybe Schematic can help you here.

If that does not give you enough information, I would get a Clymer, Seloc, or other service manual. It will help you in many other ways.

Happy boating and repairs.

Re: replacing impeller

RSGONZA,
Just replaced the impeller on my 74 - 40hp.
After you have your new gaskets in place / put tape over the splines on the shaft so not to damage the impeller when sliding on shaft. When impeller in place, slide cover down to impeller...while turning the drive shaft "CLOCKWISE" pressure the top cover down over the impeller. - the impeller will now be rotating in the proper direction. Do NOT rotate -counterclockwise...next you will need to have your shift shaft properly aligned to marry the L/U with the gear case...good luck. (really not to hard to do cause the guys on this site really helped me a bunch!!!!!) DMZ.
