Replacing hub. New one won’t go on. What’s wrong? Do I need a new axle?

Good morning all from just outside of Seattle. Recently I purchased a 86 Boston Whaler Montauk 170. A boat I have wanted for some time. I picked up the boat at the sellers house and drove it about 10 miles back to mine. There was a loud as I was pulling it but since I had never pulled it, I chalked it up to being just the sound it makes when towed. I was wrong. When I got home and pulled it into my driveway I noticed something was REALLY wrong with with the right wheel. The wheel had way too much play. Between work and kids, I was not able to get it up on jack stands and take a look until yesterday.

What I found was troubling. The bearing buddy was gone, the bearing had exploded. The castle nut was cranked down tight and did not have a cotter pin. I removed the hub, finding the mangled remnants of the berrings and races. Removing the raced was difficult. They were mangled but still intact and getting them off the straight spindle was a challenge, Eventually I got them off without breaking out the Dremel.

The area of the spindle between where the races sit was pitied and very rough, I assumed this was caused by driving with the berrings destroyed. I put some sandpaper on it and cleaned it up quite a bit then went down to West Marine and bought two pregreased hub and Bering sets. After measuring with calipers, I determined that I needed 1 1/16 size.

I slid the hub onto the spindled and it only went on about and inch before meeting resistance. Never having done this before, I thought maybe they needed a little help and gave the hub a couple sacks with the rubber mallet. No dice. It would not go on. I then tried to remove it and it was now stuck on. I started yanking on it and eventually the berrings came loose and the hub came out. What I found was that the inner race had hit the pitted area and stopped. It would not slide past this area. See the photo.

Any ideas on next steps here? Should I try to keep sanding until the race easily on? Am I going to need to just buy a new axle? Am I doing something wrong? Help.

Bearing should slide on shaft with ease.

Time for a file and sand paper. The shaft should be as smooth as a baby’s back side.
If you can feel a bur running your hand over it you need to “sand” more

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... I use a flat file to remove burrs,....
It ends up quicker, easier, 'n smoother, than sand paper or emery cloth,....

The bearing race should just barely slide all the way onto the greased shaft,...
