I am replacing the head gasket on my 74 1500 and am wondering if I should replace any others while I am at it? Is there a weak area that tends to wear out that should be dealt with preimptively?

This motor has run hot I assume due to the impellar being fried and the head gasket on #1 cylinder being bad. Would this have blown any other gaskets? Any way to tell without tearing it down?

There is a full powerhead gasket set available through oldmercs.com, I am wondering if it would be worth the extra $70 to have all the gaskets?

I am doing this because after hooking garden hose up to the water tube and running, there was water coming out the #1 spark plug. I did a compression test before runing and the #1 cyl read 90psi. After running, the comp Jumped to 120psi. Am I right in assuming that it is the head gasket?

Are no head gaskets on the inline 6 engines, the water you see does leak out of the outer water jacket, the inline engines uses a blind bore design... block and head are casted as one part.....

You should remove the water jacket and replace the gasket, do some cleaning inside at the same time ( salt residue, sand or other water carried particles ).

Else you should replace the water pump ( if you haven't done so yet ), then give the engine a decarb job, next a good tune up ( timing and carb adjustment ), might read tru this post too :) .

Some good reading here too ( engine parts )
