Currently replacing the fuel fuel/VRO pump on my Johnson 50 hp, 2000 model # j50plssm. Trying to switch fuel pump to a non-VRO type. VRO has previously been disconnected and I have been premixing. I have a manual, which is not much help concerning switching pumps. Is it as simple as removing the VRO pump and installing the new new non-VRO? New pump has one inlet and two outlets, old VRO has more, including the hose to the two carbs splitting into three lines. What does the third hose feed? Also, should the bolt holes that hold the old VRO be used to attach the new non- VRO pump? Part # of new pump is 438557. Do I have the wrong part??

Yes -- I used one of the older style pumps that has a point end on it. The pulse port is on the back side (engine side of this pump) and the entire pump bolts in the area at the port side of the engine where you will find a silver (stainless steel) bolt. That port enters the crankcase and provides the vacuum/pressure pulses to operate the pump. There is a round gasket that fits in there as well. If the pump you use does not have the rear port but rather a separate port, then that port connects via hose to the port where the pulse limiter fitting is located on the forward side of the pump. The other two ports are the fuel inlet and outlet. Either style of pump will work.

Re: replacing fuel pump

I know this is a huge bump but it is the exactly same subject. I have the same motor as the guy who started the thread with the same non vro pump. I have the port on the back of the pump, the gas feeding in the front, my gas leaving out the bottom right side of my pump and what looks like another port for the pulse on the bottom left. For some reason I am getting a little confused here. Doesn't it seem like there is one too many ports here? Can someone please get my head straight?

In your case you have to use the VRO pulse hose onto the pump and not the pulse hole on the engine.

do I plug the hole off of the back or leave everything open? That is what is confusing me a little bit.

The hole at the back should not go through on that pump.
There are only two types of pumps:
Fuel in and out with pulse hole at the back.
Fuel in and out with pulse nippel (next to fuel out), no hole at the back.

Re: replacing fuel pump

the 2000 still has the block pulse port, there is just a bolt in it. i have done many. just did one yesterday. use fuel pump BRP 385781 or Sierra 187352. on the port side of the block you will see 2 small empty bolt hole, and a large hole in the center with a bolt in it. remove the bolt. you fuel pump mounts there. (don't forget the gasket) block the pulse line under the carb with a bolt and fuel line zip tie. install you inlet line to the black plastic cover, and outlet to carbs the the body of the fuel pump. pump up the bulb, check for leaks, and go boating.

I had already gotten a 438557 because that is what it had said to use in the parts catalog for that motor. That should be fine, right?

Re: replacing fuel pump

I called BRP to ask them a question about the fuel manifold and he started getting on my case about using a non-vro pump and was telling me that I would have to take it to a qualified mechanic. He said it would run to lean and mess up the motor. Has anyone else dealt with this? I was just planning on mixing it 50:1, is the correct? I am sick of calling BRP and always dealing with their crappy customer service.

Re: replacing fuel pump

yu can use that pump. but you will have to use the pluse line from the VRO pump, instead of the block mounting.

the major difference of the 48 spl and 50 hp vro, is the 2 fuel pumps. the BRP guy is trying to make a sale.

Alright, I think I just made a boo boo. I went off of the BRP parts catalog and wan the lines like it showed no there and the fuel went through the pulse hose and out the exhaust. How bad did I just mess up? Is it safe to start the motor?

Re: replacing fuel pump

If it's not one problem it's another. I just swapped out the pumps and went to crank it and it wouldn't start. My VDC goes from 12 to 0 immediately when I try to crank. When I stop trying to crank it goes immediately back to 12. This problem didn't arise until I swapped the pumps. Is there something I have to do with the wiring in the motor that connected to the VRO2? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

your batt shoudl be 12.6 or better, try a different batt first, ie booster pack/cable just to rule that out, it should not go strait to 0V unless the batt is toast.
