The fly wheel on my 1969 1250 merc is cracked and needs to be replaced, I have a spare motor and the fly wheel on the spare is in good shape. I just need to know if i can loosen the one nut on the fly wheel and it comes off, or if it is more complicated than that. thanks

Re: Replacing Fly Wheel

to do it right you need a flywheel puller to get it off

don't overtighten the nut on the new one, I've seen stuff like that crack wide open! If you can find the torque spec somewhere and use a torque wrench!

Re: Replacing Fly Wheel

If I remember right that is a two piece flywheel. I have a 1968 1250, and mine cracked. It was the sheet steel part that joined the outer and inner flywheel parts. I undid the cap screws that are in a ring around the central flywheel nut to the crank. The outer part came off along with the rope starter piece, and I just put in the new outer ring.
Take a look...I think yours may be the same.

Re: Replacing Fly Wheel

I got the new fly wheel put on, and I lined up all my marks as far as the timing is concerned, but it still wont start. Originally what happend was me and my wife went fishing and the motor started right up, shut it off and started trolling with my electric motor. We were ready to go so I went to fire up the big motor and it wouldn't start. I looked things over and saw that my flywheel was cracked so I thought that was the problem. Now that I have a good flywheel on it is doing the same thing. I have spark, it is getting fuel, it sounds like it wants to start but it just doesn't. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
