I’ve replaced the intire system except for the carburetor hoses under the cowling.
should I go back with oem or can I use something like tygon hose. Oh it’s my 1992 40hp Yamaha again.

If the motor is working fine why bother with replacing the hoses?

The lines are old and I don’t want to wait until I have a leak somewhere. I’m big on preventative maintenance. Also I have the Tygon here from other things I’ve done work on. This is my first outboard and I don’t want to do anything dangerous.

Tygon is pretty soft.
OE hose is nothing special.
Just match it up with what your local auto supply house carries.

Update: I ordered oem hoses for under the cowling because of some 90 degree turns. I have one more question. The new fuel line is 5/16” and I installed a 10 micron fuel water separator. The line under the cowling is 1/4” with a screen inline filter. Since I’ve installed the water separator should I remove the inline? I’m concerned about fuel restriction, otherwise I’d like to keep the inline.

The stick and stone catcher isn’t an issue if you installed a quality, properly sized separating filter.

Some filters have a pretty bad pressure drop right of the box.
I would stay away from filters that don’t spec a pressure drop.

Keep the internal inline filter as well.

Thanks Sea Rider for the input. I looked and the inline is a wix automotive. I’ve no on some forums people saying they can screen the oil out of the 2 cycle mix. Is that possible?

It’s a Sierra and isn’t supposed to be bad on restriction. At least that’s what I was told when I called there support and told them what I was doing. The inline is a Wix with a screen . I think it’s automotive.

Why isn't the motor using the OEM Yamaha inline fuel filter, it's just a simple screwable mesh screen filter, don't know the Wix one. Can you post a pic ?

We ran Yam's 60-85 HP with water separator filters and original OEM inline fuel filters with 0 issues. That I now the only possible way to screen a 2 stroke oil is if mixing 2 different brands 2 stroke oil with screen filters.

When I bought the boat it had no filter at all so I picked up the wix so it would have something. First thing I noticed was little black specs so that started the replacement of the fuel lines and I’ve been learning as I go. I found out it was oil injected and all of that has been removed and the oem filter is missing as well. I installed the hoses under the cowling today but left the wix out for now. I can get an oem and put it back in if that would work better for my set up. The wix does not stay full when running just a steady flow when I had the boat out and it ran good.F315D678-BB83-4F85-96EA-487204FE4398.jpeg

Assume the wix filter was installed between the fuel line entrance and the fuel pump, right ?

If your motor is oil injected not an issue running a wix filter if it's going to be used to filter gasoline only, as long the motor works well throughtout the whole throttle range keep using the wix one.

The difference between a wix and a OEM one is that the latter works sitting fully vertical and fully charged while runing.

All of the injector parts are gone and I have to premix my fuel using a portable tank. Will the OEM work with premix? I really appreciate all the advice you’re giving me by the way. Thank you. And yes it’s before the fuel pump.

You're welcome,

What's your current Yam 40 model, there's 10 models listed for 1992. If plan installing an OEM Yam fuel filter there's no issue running a fuel/oil premix, usually 50:1 or keep using the wix as long there's no fuel restriction when running say 3/4 to max throttle .

It is a 40 MSHQ. The three cylinder. The parts break down on line shows the OEM filter when I m searching by model. Like I have said I’m learning as I go. That’s why I waited to splice the wix into
the new line. I’m paranoid I’m doing something wrong. I sure appreciate this forum. It’s answered a lot of other questions I was able to just search for .

That’s the one I found. I was just concerned about running the pre mixed fuel through it. Thanks for confirming and all your help. Now I have to find out about the thermostat housing I posted a picture in another thread on here. The hits just keep on coming.
The housing has a small hole behind the thermostat and I don’t know if it’s supposed to be there.57B4F3ED-8B12-4623-A168-AFE9F06182BB.jpeg
