Well I finally found the problem. I posted before about my Johnson 140 not swithcing into gear and found that the shift cable was bad. I took apart the box "Evinrude power piolt" and sawy that the arm was swinging and movig the cable but it was not moving the cable back at the gear shifter. My quesiton is I am looking at an overtons catalog and OMC OEM cables by telefex are 24.99 for my length. Is that a good price and how do I disconnect cable from control box?? It looks like mine as rivet non-bolt pattern in it any help thanks??
Andrew

AFishin....if it's the one I'm thinkin about, the rivet you are lookin at is a pin. All ya' do is lift it out. Just to be sure, what's the year the motor and control box?

Hello
you need to post the year of the control although I think all the power pilots were pre 79. the cable ends in the box are attached with small set screws. you have to position the cables just right toacces the back side screws. each cable end should have 2 setscews. if it uses removable cable guides them make sure the ends of the new cables are tempered. if they are not then the set screws will not Bite into the cable and the cable end will slip off.
Good luck and keep posting :)

the throttle came off an 73 Evinrude 135 starflite.. so I would assume that it is a 73. Is that any help?

Re: replacing broken shift cable??

AF....look at where the shift rod casing guide connects to the control box shift lever. You sill see a set screw. There is also on on the other side. Losen the set screw two or three turns. This will release the shift cable core and it can be remove from the casing guide. To install the new cable, just reverse the procedure. Some find it easier to remove the shift lever from the control box and make the connection. Hope this helps.

Takes a small allen head wrench. Common thing in a tool box.
