replacing 1983 140 HP lower unit gears with 1974 115 lower unit gears.

Replacing 1983 140 HP lower unit gears with 1974 115 lower unit gears from a nice extra lower unit I was given. Can this be done? Or are the gears different or a different ratio.

I would look at the parts breakdown for each lower unit and see if the part numbers are the same for the parts you want to exchange.

I don't have any books or #s on the parts. I guess I was looking for an easy answer on weather the parts are interchangable.

Sorry but will not work as the 74 gears are for hydro mechanical setup and case internals are machined different. The forward gear has notches on it to drive the oil pump in nose of unit.
