Boat Info VIP 2000 Cuddy (21') with a GM 5.7 litre and OMC Cobra drive system. OMC Drive Systems Model 985290 and Serial T0151832.

I need to replace my steering cable and need some direction in finding the correct replacement cable. The cable that is in the boat I believe was replaced by the prior owner and seems to be a little too long (see picture below). The information on the cable in place is Morse 300619 204 (in).

I believe this is a 17' (204 in) cable. Maybe a 16' cable would be more appropriate?? What do you guys think?

Here are pictures of the rear end of the cable disonnected, the securing nut removed, the rack, the rack to cable junction, and the pinion gear.

When I order the new cable will it come with a new rack and the female end that connects to the cylinder assembly? I don't see how the cable could be removed from these components. Is Morse no longer being produced? All I have found is Teleflex... Brands and model numbers of a correct replacement cables would be VERY helpful.

Thanks for all help and suggestions in advance.

Re: Replacement Steering Cable

I measured the dimensions per the Teleflex website to try and determine how long of a cable I should get. Here are the dimensions:

Measurments.jpg

They give to formulas to determine proper cable lenth... one or For Tilt Tube Mounting, and one for Transom/Splashwell/Stringer Support Mounting. I assume I should follow the 2nd? I am not familiar with these terms, what is the difference and which one do I have?

If I add dimensions and subtract 6" per the second formula I come of with just over 15' (15.16) and then it recommends rounding up to the next foot. This would be 16' and I think makes good sense since the 17' in place looks just a little too long.

I am still unclear of the new cables come with the rack and female end connection?

you didn't say why you are replacing cable. but to answer a couple questions, yes, the cables come with rack, shaft. cables can be found right here on iboats.com, top left corner of header, under iboats.com logo. "boat parts and accessories"

Yes, it includes the rack on the end. BUt you would be better off replacing the cable and helm unit. There have been many cables with just minor changes in the rack, bolt pattern, gear depth, etc.
Teleflex bought out Morse years ago, so Morse isn't making anything anymore.
