I had a bit of a time of it a few years ago with a 4.3. Ordered Sierra risers and manifolds....the risers didn't seem to be quite machined or cast well enough to easily seal them against the manifolds....took two gaskets and a hell of a bit of tightening down to stop them leaking....almost to the point of snapping bolts.

Just installed Barr, checked the risers and manifolds with a straight edge and a .002" feeler gauge, would not fit in anywhere, so the machining was good. No problems with the threads in the manifolds, bolts gaskets etc fit well. Tony if you want a set check out Partman AKA Lighthouse Marine in Riverhead, might be worth a drive out there to save the shipping (heavy as you know lol). I got mine from a local shop that got them from Partman. Barr still made in USA. I used the Barr manifold/riser gaskets (fiber & metal sandwich) coated both sides and sealing surfaces with Permatex Aviation Form a Gasket, sealed well. Re-torqued after initial warm up.

Yes, Barr is a good quality brand. Got some at a decent price for my old 454 Mercruiser.

I believe Barr makes the block off gaskets for the closed cooled manifolds, let em know that's how you're setting it up so they will give you all the right stuff...

And if you have any questions on the install, email or call Barr customer service, the tech will get right back to you...

I know yer in the brine, 'n have closed coolin', so I also donno whether there would be any advantage, or not,....

I was going to look into that myself, because it is a better design esp for raw water cooled manifolds/risers. But I was not sure that the angle of the Merc risers could adapt to the OMC/Volvo style Y pipe. So I went with the standard Volvo design knowing that it would fit for sure. However, the next time if I still have this boat then, if I can get a shop to loan me a mani & riser I'd like to see if it could be made to work. They are more expensive than the standard style ones, but probably worth it. In Tony's case of a boat with full closed cooling, there may be some advantage to the standard risers because the gasket used for full closed cooling on the dry joint system is even less likely to fail, than the one used on the wet exhaust. Whatever you use, the key is to use good gaskets and in salt those risers have to be taken off and probably replaced at 5 years, if not the manifolds too.

I don't know why everyone bashes on GLM... yes I know they had a bad rep... but there stuff that is sold now (within that last 2 years) is good... they have completely gone threw there build process and it shows! I have them on 1 of my boats (500+ hours in 2 years) and they are in great shape... I have pulled the elbows of to check them every 200 hours.. in fact there way better looking than the barr's I have on my other boat that have 3/4 the hours on them... both boats are 100% salt water cooled and I flush them the same way after every use... I know when it comes time I will replace the barr's with GLM... if cost is not an issue I would go mercruiser dry joint

Barr is the oem casting house used by companies such as edelbrock, mercruiser, volvo penta, and pleasure craft as well as others. They also have an internal design team. Very good quality

On the Barr ones I just I installed no filing necessary. All I had to do was remove the paint and clean it up with a quick sanding with 600. Checked it with a straight edge and feeler gauges...perfect!
