I have this Garmin unit which I'm very happy with but the Screen's just not reliable anymore .... goes off on its own sometimes, screen impossible to read others .... I wouldn't mind buying a replacement, but I'd like to just replace the unit, not the piece that sits under the boat, or the power supply, or the wiring. Does anyone know if a newer Garmin or other unit would be compatible with the existing hardware? Thx much, DMiller

A little sleuthing on Garmin's website might tell you. Look up accessories/replacement cables for your unit and cross-check what else they fit.

... not the piece that sits under the boat, ....

I assume you are referring to the transducer... And since this unit is only a GPS chartplotter, the transducer is not connected to it, it's connected to your echo sounder (aka Fishfinder/depth sounder).... The only things connected to the GPS are the power/data lead and the antenna cable (unless you're using it with the internal antenna).

iboats has a range of Garmin GPS chartplotters worth having a look at http://www.iboats.com/Marine-GPS-Cha...view_id.248087... As Garmin are not in the habit of adding part numbers to their cables in the specifications it's difficult to know if they use the same cable.

Replace everything. Technology is light years beyond the 172. The new cabling and connections are worth the upgrade alone
