Right now my 1982 Grady White Tournament 22 runs pretty good with the 485 engine it has in it. Unfortunately, I've been reading a lot of negatives about this engine, which has me a bit worried. It has a bit over 2000 hrs. on it and the compression is around 155 on each cylinder. If and when the time comes, what engine would be the best to replace it with in terms of ease of installation and horsepower. The boat has power steering and washdown system if that is of use when making a determination. Thanks.

I suggest that you stop reading :D. There is no engine that will "drop in". If you take care of that one, and change the impeller every other year or so, when the time comes, rebuild it over the winter and it should last for say... another thirty years or so.

Howdy,

As much I (as a NON-"470" owner) would say I'd never get a boat with one of those......

If I had one and it ran well, I wouldn't do anything but take care of it and run it!

AND if I wasn't going to replace the entire engine/drive with another different (complete V-6/V-8 ) "sweet-deal" engine and drive,

I would just do what Terry suggested and rebuild or replace (with a long-block)

From what I "read" (and I read a LOT!) if you take good care of the 3.7L engine (and don't ever let it over heat), it's about as good as any other.

If you neglect maintenance on any engine system, they'll all fail you at some point or other......

The 470 series is a great engine when all the updates are done and taken care of. I love the fact my 470 has great power and fuel mileage.

You guys are making me feel better. Right now the engine does not even come close to overheating so I am going to do my best to keep it that way. I'm gonna sleep better knowing that the fate of the 485 lies in my hands. Thanks guys!!!!!!!!
