A guy in another forum is asking about whether this is the part number for the subject part and drive above:

cone clutch 807375A2

Other than being unavailable new as an individual part, is there any reason he cannot get a used part and install it with his gear set? For example, must it be replace with a matching gear set or something like that?

Thanks

The first Gen cone clutch and gears are made as a set. There were issues with the set and in later drives the complete gear set was changed. As you have determined, the recommended method of repair is replace the entire gear set as a unit, because the newer gears will not work with the older parts

To answer your question: Yes, if an old set is found, and in good shape, then they can be installed. The issue with used, is its very hard to just look at a gear set and tell if its worn to much. Your rolling the dice

Some have taken the cone clutch apart and used emery cloth and polished the shaft and get iot going again, but don't know for how long. No one came back with info

Keep in mind that the B3 is only the lower section of the drive, the upper (where the gear set is) is a standard B1. This is also not to say that every B1 upper will fit on any B2 or B3 lower. There have been changes over the years, so need to know what your looking at.

Might be able to find an old B1 upper from Sick Stinger on OSO

Thanks, I will relay a link to your reply to him. He also noticed that there was a used cone clutch on eBay by itself and the seller recommends using lapping compound to "seat" it to the existing gears (like valve seats). Does that make any sense or is he just trying to make a sale? Thanks again.

Yes, that is what a couple others have done, but again you have a worn part that was proven to be unreliable. You might get it working again, and might not. Folks on ebay will sell anything.

Look closely at the ridges on the clutch, they should be sharp as opposed to a leading flat edge. The cone can be deglazed and not a big deal
