I just got a 40 hp jhonson, realized one of the washer things used to clamp it to the boat is missing. What can i use to replace it? the rest of the clamping mechinisim is there. I was thinking about 2 washers one smaller than the other, and stacking them. The pressure from clamping it should hold everything in place right?

What do you think?

pt no.0310938 swivel plate and pt no.0302420 swivel plate retainer are the things you want. i imagine these are similar over the years but check part numbers against your model year....other than that, the washer thing might be an option...but these parts are probably less than 10 bucks or you may find a wrecked one with a part to salvage..good luck

Re: replacement clamp/washer ??

Hi, I'm anxious to hear what suggestions others may have about this too. A long time ago I had the same situation on my 57 18 horse. I got a pair of replacement screws for the transom clamps at the local OMC dealer. They have worked fine however the cheap looking black plastic handles on the screws have gotten on my nerves ever since. I recently got a 58 18 horse parts motor and it has one clamp screw with no washer on it too. I'm thinking I'll take the bolts and washers off of the replacement screws and adapt them to the old original screws. I don't remember now what the exact configuration of the ends of the replacement screws was any more. But I think it just had a flat end with a threaded hole in the middle and the bolt had a step on it where the washer goes. One should be able to grind the end of the original screw flat and drill and tap a hole for the bolt.

At the time there was no kit available to repair the original screws. Replacement screws was the only option. That situation may have changed. Or the dealer in question just didn't know about them. Good luck with it!

Cheers................Todd
