Replacement axle question

Thanks for the recent replies on my thread about "Hot Tires". I followed the advice to consider replacing my overloaded single axle with Champion Trailer's tandem conversion.

Looks good, and is what I need, but it brought up another question. My current axle is 2X3 inches and fits under the springs, but is the spindle is raised up three inches. That drops the trailer quite bit, and the rear bar is less then 6 inches off the ground.

The Champion axles have various shapes, but their similar one appears to be raised only one inch.

OK - then I would have to buy two new axles to get them the same height. The difference between the current and new axles would mean the trailer would sit two inches higher.

I spoke with Shoreland'r who made this trailer. They wanted to sell me a new tandem, and warned me against messing with the original design. As far as I can see, their single-axle fit on this large trailer was the only mistake.

Any advice for me on the height change or or other concerns?

Re: Replacement axle question

Lark,
It sounds to me as if you have what is called in the industry a:
3 or 4 inch Drop Axle that is "overslung"
What this means is that it drops the trailer height 3 or 4 inches and that the springs are mounted overthe axle.
You Shouldn't have a problem using a straight (no drop)axle that is "underslung" (springs sit under the axle)
You are going to have to replace your fenders also, if you can find them.
You will need the following parts/measurements to order a new set of axles"
Hub Face to Hub Face Distance.
Spring Center to Spring Center.
under or over slung (you decide)
Stud Pattern 5 lug X ???(4.5--5--5.5 inches)
To get this measurement measure from the center of a stud skipping a stud to the center of stud and adding a 1/4 inch.
You will also need a u-bolt kit for both axles and a tandem attaching parts kit.
