I recently replaced my impeller in my 1963 20hp mercury. after some work with the ignition system I got it fire up and it ran really nice smooth. But no water coming out of the hole so i shut it off. Now i'm guesing that some thing is clogged up restricting water flow. recently I did flush it throught the screw hole near the power head. I had water come out throught the prop and that was it. Any help is greatly appreciated

It's not uncommon for those older engines with the telltale coming out of the top flange of the mid section to plug up to the point where you have to remove the powerhad and clean the passages

Looks like i'm pulling the head. What needs to be done for me to take off the power head.

Before you do that, why not drop the foot enough to get the water tube out at the bottom and then put some compressed air up the tube to check the passage? If it's clear, then I, too, opt for the impeller not being keyed to the shaft...those little keys are sneaky.

I know I got the key in after all the trouble I had trying to get it in to begin with I know its in i check it by rotating the shaft and the impeller spun to.
perhaps my water inlet is cloggle or the pipe that leads from it is clogged.
Because when I ran the egine I had exhaust come out of the top water exit hole but know water. I guess i'll pull the lower today and check it out.

Dan, it's been a while but if I remember right there is a short passage cast into the bottom of the block that goes to the area under the exhaust plate and they plug in that area.

Which way did you rorate the pump housing when positioning it over the impeller?

If you twisted the tips of the impeller the wrong way, you may not get enough pressure to push the water up through the passage(s)

My Mark 10 did the same thing so I shut it off, turned on the garden hose (underwater in my test stand), fired it up, and stuck the hose right up to the water inlet screen and kinda forced the water through it while it was running (just make sure it's in neutral so you don't sacrifice a finger to the propeller god :p). Sure enough it coughed out some junk at the outlet hole. After that, it picks up water on the first pull of the recoil every time.

Heres the update. I pulled the lower unit just about thirty minutes ago and I opened up the waterpump housing everything is in the proper order. the tube from the inlet to the housing wasn't clogged. I also ran a small plastic hose to the water tube that goes to the powerhead I then connected that hose to a regualr hose and then i turned on the water. NOTHING! This is really getting to me what should i do next.

did you try running a small hose it self up the water tube, or did you attach the hose to the bottom of the water tube?

Heres what I did I took an old gear lube pump and some pipe cutters and I retro fitted it to the garden hose and then I plugged it in to the water tube and I turned up the water pressure to see if I could blast anything out and I got nothing. So this is where I'm stuck at.

I don't think it even has one. I'm starting to think the water jacket is all clogged up with corrosion because I did buy it in Florida and chances are it was ran in salt water. So i guess that the next thing I should do is clean out the water jacket and see if that helps any.
