Oh BTW, the DVA is a product from ES (Electronic Specialties,Inc.) purchased from Network Tool Warehouse for under 30.00.

Quite possible. The whole thing that is confusing the issue is that you say you replaced all these parts. I always first tend to doubt that new parts are bad. I know it is possible, but I always question whether I am doing something wrong first...

Re: Replaced stator, power pack, trigger and still no spark

This is gonna be a long one...If I am not mistaken, this is a kind of oddball ignition system compared to other J/E designs. I believe the trigger signal "rides" on top of approx. 100v DVA. The pulse that the pack detects is a fast negative pulse starting at the 100v DVA, and pulsing down toward zero. The DVA measuring is virtually useless in this case, as the meter sees only the relatively steady 100v., and "stores" that 100v, sort of ignoring the very quick downward spike. I know it doesn't help here, but I bought an oscilloscope to look at the trigger and pack outputs. I just don't have a whole lot of luck using the homemade DVA adapter OR the ESI DVA direct reading meter that sells for about 80 bucks. To sum up, I doubt you will be able to tell if there is a pulse from the trigger or not. CDI's website says you should have 6-12v from white to white/black. If that is missing, my best guess would be a bad pack. If you replace the pack and it still has no spark, then it probably is the trigger!!!.....See how easy that is?:joyous::joyous:

Yeap, totally agree, I'm a signal maintainer by trade and I also do most of my own auto repairs but these cdi ignitions I have no experience with. I'm hoping it turns out to be a defective replacement pack. I'll post results when new pack comes. CDI's troubleshooting shows trigger voltage specs connected and disconnected. I'm getting 0 volts either way so I'm hoping that its because pack is not supplying voltage to trigger. We'll see! Thanks Again !

I am looking at page 41 and 42 of the CDI troubleshooting guide. It gives DVA voltages with the timer base both connected and disconnected. I suggest you try both ways to see if you can gain any insight there. Look at the notes on the CDI doc. Especially the note that is signified by the # symbol.

CDI phone tech said pack should be supplying 6-10 volts to trigger on white and black/white and if not trigger won't work

Re: Replaced stator, power pack, trigger and still no spark

The spark test (jumping a 7/16" gap) must be done with "all" of the spark plugs removed in order to obtain the highest cranking rpm. The engine must crank at least 300 rpm in order for the stator to energize the powerpack.

Remove the Black/Yellow wire from the ignition switch. If you now have spark, replace the ignition switch.

DO NOT connect any ground wires from any accessory to either of the "M" terminals of the ignition switch. If connected, this would transfer voltage flowing from the accessory to the ignition system (powerpack).

Note: Model E50DTLECA is a 1998 50hp Evinrude, NOT a 1997.

Signal maintainer? Can you get your hands on a scope? I hate to play the 'ol "scope" card, because you are supposed to be able to diagnose and fix these ignitions with just the DVA meter. I dunno. Also note the voltage expected from the timer base when disconnected should be 0.6v....very hard to read with some DVAs like I mentioned above.

Maybe go back a bit and check basics. Those rubber connectors from pack to timerbase are known to have pins push back in the rubber boot, and result in an open connection. Re-check that, particularly the pins for white and black/white wires, as an open there would kill all spark. A pushed back pin on the blue, purple, or green wire would kill spark only to 1, 2, 3, respectively. (Three cyl motor.)

Your gonna laugh but early on I soldered the wires in the stator and trigger connectors. That didn't work so I replaced the pins and sleeves.

Well I learned something, thank guys. I did not know that the pack sent a signal to the triggers for Quickstart. I'll PM you guys if you don't mind to find out more. :joyous:

Multimech, I sure know that feeling. I've seen references to "Quick Start" and "Slow" but am not sure what they are. And Pack sending 6 to 10 volts to trigger (which is not happening ) would seem to explain why I'm not getting anything out of the trigger/timer base. Hope the CDI tech is correct!

CDI is correct. Was the replacement pack a Sierra? had 2 bad out of the box. Just for curiosity, try cranking with the plug going to the head sensor undone.

Update;just received new power pack and installed it and I'm happy to say that it was a bad power pack. Started right up! Thanks to everyone for your help!!!

Hello Vin58....hope your still out there.
I know this is a very old post/problem of yours.....and glad to see you finally found the problem.
Im going through exactly the same problem with a 2000 Johnson 60hp. Just waiting on the arrival of a DVA to try and locate the problem.
Im curious though........did you have anymore issues with the ignition system?.....or was it definitely the Power Pack?

Cheers.
