Replaced Rectifier, Now Won't Start

I have twin 1994 150 Johnsons. Just before I headed out for some afternoon fishing and while the boat was still in the driveway, I started the engines. The port engine started fine, but the tach was not working. I ran the engine for 3 to 4 minutes, then shut it down & moved the water to the stbd engine. While hooking up the water I noticed that the port engine (that was turned off) was billowing smoke. I jumped in the boat and turned off the battery. Apparently, the regulator/rectifier had shorted out. The local marine parts store offered to order one for me at $350, but I found one online at $188. Simple to switch out, the wires were a direct match. But now the engine won't start. I triple-checked the wires, everything looks good.

Any ideas???

Did you check to see if you have spark? It should jump a 7/16" open air gap. Tether switch connected ?

When you say it won't start, do you mean the engine is dead, or that it turns over-but won't fire. If the engine is dead, it could be the fuse in the main engine wiring harnees under the cowling.

OMG, $350 for a regulator? And I thought $250 chainsaws after an ice storm was bad.

It would have been great if it were the tether switch. Not no, everything seemed fine there. I checked to see if the spark plugs were firing, and no, there was no spark. The engine turns over just fine, but does not fire at all.

The engine will turn over fine. Apparently, the spark plugs are not firing. Could another part have been fried when the regulator/rectifier got fried?

If your rectifier went, then more than likely the stator went to. Check up under the flywheel for melted plastic. I believe this is one of the 34 amp stators that are prone to failure. Check with a meter is you have any power going to the power packs. Don't know the wire but it would be come from the stator to the power packs. The melted plast will be black in colour and dripped over the top of the block.

Ugh... I was afraid that the problem would get wor$e. I'll check for the dripping black wire tomorrow after work. "Thank you" to everybody for your replies and suggestions.

A good guess would be the stator but with out the proper test equipment for checking output voltages from the stator, pack it's still a guess. One more thing, look for the black/yellow wire back by your pack and make sure that it is not grounded out. This will also kill your ignition.

Re: Replaced Rectifier, Now Won't Start

Problem is,,the stator isn't visible on the OIS system, theres a flywheel cover with 18 bolts and gasket.
But there are plenty of troubleshootin tests you can do without special tools.

On the 1994 OIS 150hp theres a seperate yellow/red striped wire between the starter solenoid and PP that provide 12v to the PP during cranking only, its so the PP gets strong voltage , the stator shouldn't be an issue during cranking. When the ignition key is released the stator takes over.
The yellow/red wire is located in the 5 wire packard plug that goes to the PP. That plug may have gotten damaged. If volts are below 11v on the y/r wire during cranking the ignition will not spark , charge the battery and check cables.

To test the stop circuit disconnect the 5 wire packard plug from the PP and see if spark returns.
Whilst you're at it, disconnect the red cannon harness plug under the hood and jump the starter, see if spark returns.
Final troubleshootin test, disconnect the regulator/rectifier and see if spark returns.

I think you'll find a damaged wire or balky packard connector plug, sometimes the wires can get pushed back and not make contact.
See this for info on the OIS system.

The engine is now running! Apparently, there was a bad connection. Thank you everyone for your help. I could not have fixed this problem without you.
