Replaced my trim pump, now the solenoids won't work

Hello all,
I have a 1987 Glasstron boat with a 3.0 mercrusier engine and an alpha one out drive. Serial number on the motor is B456946. I purchased the boat from a friend of mine who let it sit for a few years, and am trying to work out all the bugs to get it water ready. I got the motor running, and am now working on the trim system. I figured out that the pump was the issue (solenoids clicked, and distributed power properly, also tried to jump the motor and got nothing). So i contacted my local marine repair shop, and had them order me a motor. The old one was a metal cased square motor. The new one he sold me was supposed to be the newer replacement, and bolt right to my pump. It does, but the problem now is that the plate that the solenoids mount to cannot screw in properly to the top of the motor, like it did to the old motor. Because of this, I can't ground the plate onto the pump properly. I tried to run the ground directly to the plate, but that didn't work either. I get just under 1v when the switch is operated. I tried putting the old motor back in, and while the motor didn't work, the solenoids both put out the proper voltage when the switch was activated. I'm at a loss, and hoping someone else has a solution to my issue. Thanks.

Howdy Rick

You have some kind of bad ground for sure, and there is something missing. Running a jumper to the plate should work. With not enough room you could get a bracket from the hardware store and bolt the plate on at another angle. There should be a 10AWG wire which goes to the engine block.

Post two more times providing info or even "post 2" then "post 3"
Then you can upload a pic so we can see what you have

Ok. I will post some pictures in a few hours when i get home. The way its grounded right now, its direct from the battery. I bolted this ground directly to the bracket that the solenoids are attached to, and had a good reading from the bus bar to the bracket, but i couldnt get a good reading from the solenoid itself.

Only one side of the relay is grounded and that's on the coil side, so very little power is used to energize the relay. Look forward to seeing the pics

Most marine solenoids for the trim are isolated base, meaning you need to ground the coil wire . simply mounting the solenoid does not ground the coil lead
