I'm removing and replacing the outdrive (Alpha One) on my 1986 Mercruiser 140. While it's all apart, I'll inspect the transom components as well. Are there any components which I should just go ahead and replace to head off any problems, and how does one identify a gimbal bearing problem - because I really don't want to have to replace it.

Thanks in advance!

All of the Rubber..........

And the Lower Shift Cable.........

The Gimbel Bearing should turn as Smooth as Silk,.........
If there's Any Grittynest, or Play,.......
Change it as Well........

And,.... If by chance you actually Use the Trim Limit Switch,+ the Trim Indicator,........
You'd better Replace the Wiring to them Too.........

A bad gimbal bearing will be noisy. Reach in there & see if it spins freely,[no rough spots].The condition of the u-joint bellows would be something I would take a close look at, if there's any question of it's condition replace it............
