Replace Tohatsu 9.8 with 20hp - Same transom fit?

I have a 2007 Tohatsu 9.8 four stroke on my antique 14' runabout. Great little motor, but I need more power. The new Tohatsu 20hp motor looks good. My question is if the transom bracket is the same for those two motors, or will I have to drill new holes for the 20hp transom bracket?

The brackets are very similar. They use the same thrust rod (the adjuster for the correct tilt angle when down). So they are approximately the same width. Can't guarantee precise hole arrangement since I'm not in the office, and the dimension book is there.

Is your setup for tiller steering or remote/electric? The 9.8 has an unique tilt arrangement on the EP (electric remote) model. Same dimensions, as the EF (tiller electric) but a completely different setup. The 20 does not have that special bracketing on the EP model.

Also if remote control, the two motors use slightly different control boxes. The 9.8 uses the RC5C, while the 20 uses the RC5B. Same throttle and shift cables -- standard Morse type.

Different bracket dimensions so you will be drilling.

Yes, I do have the remote control electric start 9.8.

Hmmm, looks like I have both transom AND remote control box issues to deal with. Oh, well, have to expect some changes for an upgrade.
