My Radar died a few weeks ago and it looks like the bill to repair it is going to be 7 bills so I'm looking for a replacement. I'm leaning toward the Garmin 18HD or the Raymarine 2KW as the price looks good. Its probably worth saying that my current Radar that bit it was a 4KW JRC and it really performed well until it died. I had heard that the Raymarine's had some issues with dependability but had someone recommend them hard. I'm looking at combining my radar and GPS displays so that is how I ended up with the Garmin and Raymarine choices. Anything I should consider with either of these Radars or any other suggestions? Thanks

Re: Replace my dead radar

When I was looking for a chart plotter I looked hard at the Furuno 1724C setup but wanted the larger screen so I went with the Garmin 4208.

I'll be adding radar this fall and have not decided between the GMR 18HD and the GMR 24HD. THe GMR 18 would work for what I want to do but I like the smaller beam width of the GMR 24.

are you replacing the display for the radar, or the radar antenna/dome?

How do you like the 4208? That is the unit I've been considering from Garmin but have started looking at the 3210. I did look at the furuno but thought it was kinda small. I have a garmin 2010 now and like the big display.

Re: Replace my dead radar

What is the problem with the antenna? I friend I meet at Bodege bay had trouble with his antenna and we were able to fix it for about 50 cents. On his the array stoped rotating. We took the dome apart and found the array not turning. Took a close look and lubed the motor and gears and it freed right up. Put the cover back on and he was back in busness. It was another brand on the outside but JRC inside.

The modulator board is shot and they want $400 to replace it. The rest of the charge is for labor.
