Replace impeller now stuck in forward

I replaced my impeller, while the lower was out i made the mistake of touching the shifter (on the lower). I though I had it in full forward but apparently I was wrong. I put the lower back in and prior to filling it, i check to make sure it shifted between F-N-R.... well it doesnt. The lever will go about 50% of the way (to right before what would be the N position) and wont go any further. WTF am I doing wrong? ive dropped the lower a few times trying to see if maybe im not in full forward? How do I ensure I have the lower (Gen 1 lower) completely in forward before putting it back together?

Thanks for any help!

I did the same thing several times and found out the hard way that the metal shift arm on the lower unit is not engaged into the slot on the engine side. Real easy to miss the alignment as even if its off a hair it pushes to one side and will lock the motor in gear. I'll send a pic if you need,

Oh, and the only reason you are putting it into forward gear in the first place is to line up the shift rod and that u-shape receiver so it slips out and releases. Putting it back in sometimes can be a ***** because there is a hair of play on both components. Use the shifter in forward gear to get it as straight as possible and do the same on the lower unit side . When sliding it back together go slow and make sure that Metal rod is going damn straight in the u-grove or it won't work!

I think I got it, the splines may have been binding up

Im assuming its fine to start the boat and check f-n-r with not much fluid in..... am I assuming correctly? id just run it in gear for just a few seconds.

I meant, shift shaft has splines, not the actual drive shaft if that makes sense

Yea you will know right away as it will shift through all the gears without being started. I wouldn't run it without any gear oil!
And definitely not without any water-muffs. The impeller you just put in is stiff and dry and you will be spinning it in a dry housing.
