Here is a pic of the Reverse gear out of a 1981 Johnson 50hp. Looking at the rounded edges where the clutch dog meets, should the reverse gear and the clutchdog be replaced, our could I get by with just switching the dog around.

***Update: After getting the clutchdog out and looking at the mating edges of both it and the reverse gear, it looks to me like both need to be replaced. What are some of your opinions. Also, where is the best place to get these parts?

I do not believe that switching the clutch dog is an option at all !!----Perhaps it is an adjustment problem.---Clutch dog lobes are different between forward and reverse.-----Did you check the shift rod height as per a manual ?
