Am I to understand that if I have a trailer that right now is rated for 2000, I could just replace the axle with a heavier one? I really need a trailer that can caryy 3500Lbs.

Depends on the trailer frame too. Usually, a trailer is manufactured for a total load and all components are sized for that load...not just the axle.

A 2000 pound axle typically has 1-1/16 inch inner and outer bearings. a 3500 pound axle will have 1-1/16 inch outer and 1-3/8 inch inner bearings. That means the hubs and bearings would also need to be replaced.

I believe you will need a bigger coupler, springs, bearings, hubs, and wheels. All them should be rated around 2000. Most 13 inch wheels are rated at 1360 pounds. 12s are 785, and I think the higher rating for 12s is 900 something. So, to get the full 3500, you would need 14 inch tires and wheels. Some larger trailers are actually cheaper than the parts to increase yours. Then, you have to see if the frame is strong enough.
