Having some repair work done on 89 Cobalt 4.3L 175 with Alpha unit and am curious if these prices sound atleast in the ballpark.
Replacing with new
Bellows - very bad shape
shift cable - preventative since we're in there anyways
gimble bearing - grumbling when engine running and it grinded when spun by hand, i assume that is bad.
u-joints - water in the assembly along with 2 small fish:eek: , U-joint had a decent amount of rust on it alond with water all through the needle bearings(think that is right)
water pump - preventative
impeller - preventative
Basically looked like a complete rebuild of the outdrive or close, all OEM parts not aftermarket,
also a complete tune-up on the engine.

$1200 for the transom kit, plus waterpump, impeller, shift cable and complete u-joint assebly, plus other small misc. parts.
$400 for the complete tune-up, replacing everything from plugs, rotor, filters, oil etc.

Here's some pictures of the inside after we finished a serious detail - Magic Eraser ROCKS.

Thanks for any info you can give me, first boat just trying to use what I learn from you guys.

Re: Repair ?

Just FYI $1200 will get you a brand new drive with a three year warranty from SEI in Florida. You will still need the bellows shift cable and gimble bearing. However, those prices do not seem out of line.

Re: Repair ?

I would get a new drive. As for the tune up 400$ seems pretty excessive IMO but then again I do my own work because for the most part Im pretty disgusted with marine mechanics in general. Im sure there are some good ones worth the $$ they charge but I havent come across one yet in my area. They all seem to want a ton of $$ to do the smallest things and then they get mad when you call back to tell them the job they jsut did didnt work. then they come up with a million excuses why its still doing what they supposedly fixed. . This is jsut my opinion so i dont need anyone to jump up and start defending their job.

Actually,..... That's No Drive Work,.......That's Transom Work...........

$1200. for a Transom Assembley Overhaul doesn't sound That Bad,......
It's a B!tch of a Knuckle Buster Job........
And a good part of that money would be Parts.........

And $400. for a Tune-Up,....... With Shop Billing, I can understand it,.......
But, I wouldn't pay it,....... I'd be Doing it instead.......

Re: Repair ?

I'd say it's a bit high, but not much. Depends where you are and the going labor rate. Some places are probably higher. Wise investment.

Re: Repair ?

Thanks guys appreciate the feed back, looks like it's not to bad. Figured with OEM parts near $700 it sounded pretty good.

Can anyone suggest anything that I'm missing that should definitely be done while they're in there?
