Repair Simplex or switch to single-handle

My 1979 Evinrude 35hp (model 35953A) is currently using a Simplex control, but the throttle friction is worn out and the throttle will not stay in place. I'm tired of hand cramps and apologizing to skiiers (yes, we ski and wakeboard behind it!) for sudden chops to idle.

Is there a single-handle control that will work with this outboard? If so, what should I be looking for on eBay? I figure the single-handle controllers are plentiful.

Or, does anyone have good tips and parts sources for refurbishing my simplex controller?

Thanks,

James

I would fix the throttle friction on your existing control box. Just can't be that hard.

buy another simplex on ebay for parts. you have to switch cables and all with the single handle.

Re: Repair Simplex or switch to single-handle

Thanks for the advice. I have only driven a couple of single-control outboards and must admit that I am partial to the Simplex controllers, but thought it might be best for the future to upgrade. It has been a few years since I last looked at that friction mechanism, but I'll look at it again.
