I removed the screw that holds the shift rod down on the lower foot. I reinstalled it, but I have about a 1/4 inch of play on the rod. The repair shop say that it must be torn down in order to reinstall the shift rod correctly and say the cost would be around $300. Question does this sound reasonable or should I try to find a new repair shop.

The model number will allow us to "see" which motor you have. That way we can answer your question as it pertains to your exact motor.

I think there may be a way to replace it without the teardown.

Good luck!

Sometimes you can drop the gearcase, remove the shiftrod seal housing, and wiggle the shiftrod until you can get a small sharp pointed pin in place, then insert the screw. If you are realy good, disconnect the shift cable, to allow shift lever to move, then try the pointed pin. If you have great eyes you may be able to see the hole the screw goes into as you move the shift lever.
