Repair manual question

I was wondering if the Seloc Repair Manual sold here (#1300) is the best one to buy for my 1962 28h Johnson. Is there a another manual that you guys would lean to when it would come down to self servicing this motor if you owned it? Just trying to make sure I buy the right manual that will help me figure things out the best while repairing.

Also, I need to replace the impeller on this motor and was going to order the needed parts soon. Are there other parts I will need other than the impeller itself? There doesnt seem to be a water pump kit being sold for this motor, so Im assuming there isnt much else I need to buy but Im not 100% certain on that and I want to cover my bases.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Repair manual question

The consensus of folks here suggest buying a factory repair manual over the third party versions. Places like Ebay are good sources for OEM manuals. As for the water pump, if the wear plate (sits under the impeller) and the cup the impeller rides in, are in good shape, just replacing the impeller should be all you need. If the wear plate and cup are badly scored, then a full repair kit will be needed. Be sure to insert the water tube into the pump upon re-assembly and grease the drive shaft splines too. All of the steps are outlined in the repair manual.

Re: Repair manual question

Go with the factory manual, the problem with Seloc, Clymer ect is that they cover from 2-225 horse so they can't give to much detail to any one motor.
With a factory manual it covers your motor exclusively and in great detail.
As stated I got mine on Ebay for $35, do an advanced search for your year and HP something should show up if you can't find one there then outboardbooks.com

Ok thanks for the info Xcusme. I cant see where there is a impeller repair "kit" to be offered to buy though, so Ill just hope the wear plate and cup are intact.

The manual that I was looking into buying is #1300 here and it says it covers 1.5h - 40h Johnsons from 1962 to 1970 (if I recall it right), so it shouldnt have as much to sift through. I will scour Ebay to see if there is an OMC shop/factory manual out there before I order the Seloc one from IBoats though.

Thanks for the help too 5150.

Re: Repair manual question

Of course there is a complete water pump kit with housing. But you have to buy it from a Johnson or Evinrude dealer -- or at least somebody that sells genuine OMC/BRP parts. It is part number 379774. I suggest you inspect the pump first before ordering parts so you don't wind up buying an impeller and then buying another one in the kit.

Re: Repair manual question

I bought the same manual for my 6HP Johnson and believe me, you would rather have an OEM manual that is specific to your motor. The details in the SELOC manual is NOT detailed enough to suit me.
