1989 Bayliner capri with 2.3 & cobra outdrive.
All season boat has ran exceptionally well. We took it out this past wednesday...no problems.
Started around 10am today. Went all day no problems. Then we killed it to let one of our wakeboarders get ready to ride. When we went to start it just a click. Turned key off back on "click". Grabbed the cresent and went to town on the batter connections , solenoid and starter connections. All were tight. Same think "click" battery wires we getting hot each time i tried to start it. Motor is not turning over. bunch of juice going no where.. Took both battery terminals off grabed my pocket knife and gentle cleaned the inside and the battery post. Same think "click" Now im pissed. its 5pm.. were about 20min ride (3 day paddle..lol) from the ramp. I turned the key to the one position and while i wiggles that wire by the soloniod it would lose power at the dash then come back. Thinking something was shorted out i chased the ground. All is well its about 2 foot long grounded to the engine. removed wire from battery to solonoid and the wire from it to the the started. (the big gauge ones). Check for any damage to the jacket and everything seemed fine. I took the hot wire straight from the battery to the started. "click" At this point I call in for a tow and am told $300 bucks. What else can i do.. Im sitting there worrying that my battery will soon die so i figured i have a tow in route might as well mess with it. I took the hot straight to the starter again and she turned over. Dropped the drive down did this again and started her up. We drove back to the dock no problems. We figure if shes started we may as well cruise. Me being curious i killed it and went to start it again and nothing ont the dash... took the wire back off touched to the started and she turned over. At this point i figured i have pressed my luck lets go home. As soon as I even think of moving the throttle forward she dies. this happened 5-6 more times. Starts up normal. Idles normal even fast idle. Put it in gear and she dies instantly. After a few more trys we get er running and in idle. I can hear the starter is stuck "on" i pull the power cable and started stops and were back to normal. Now each time i touch the power wire to the batt the starter immed comes on. take it of and she retracts and goes off.. last time at the dock we tried it a few times and she wouldnt start. I knew she was beat to hell and didnt expect her to run so we floated er on and left.
Obviously a starter and solonoid now but why doesnt she idle and what seems to be the underlying cause of all this...
