Repainting steel wheels

I'm going to be pulling the wheels off my trailer and doing some bearing work on it. While the wheels are off, I am thinking about sanding and repainting the white steel wheels. There is a small amount of surface corrosion that I want to eliminate. It isn't anything to the point that the rust is bubbling up or anything like that, just slight discoloration.

Do you guys have any reccomendations on what kind of paint I can use on the wheels? I was initially thinking Rustoleum but I read somewhere that they do not reccomend that particular paint if it is going to be submerged.

Has anyone else ever repainted their wheels?

Thanks,
Sean

rustoleum, it's going to get dunked, not submerged. it last on metal furniture in the rain , snow and sun. submerged to me is like leaving it in the water for an extended period of time.

What would you guys opt for if you were painting your wheels? I may do them in my basement so I think I might go for the brush painted version.

Any tips on preventing the paint from getitng into the tapered lugnut holes?

Sean

Try taking a wine cork and trim it down to the size of the taper.

Smear a little vaseline or grease around the hole, paint won't stick.

Re: Repainting steel wheels

I just sprayed mine with Rustoleum "aluminum" so we'll see how long that lasts.

One tip for you - you'll spend hours trying to mask the tires. The best way is to have the tires removed, then paint - but if you're like me this is far more hassle than it's worth.

Instead, I deflated my tires and pushed the tire bead away from the rim as I slid a piece of cardboard in as far as it would go. Turn the wheel slightly and do this again. I repeated this until the tire was fully covered. This left the edge of the wheel that is visible exposed so it could be painted while protecting the tire. The pieces of cardboard were about 4 x 11 and flat, not corrugated. Remove them as soon as you're done spraying and let that side dry before repeating to paint the other side of the wheel.

Worked well for me.

"Any Grease is Better, Than No Grease At All..."

That applies Here Too............ ;)

BTW,....... It's Alot Easier Yet,... To Just Smear a fine layer of Grease over the Tires as Well............... Won't Hurt a Thing....... ;)

I use Grease Masking on Damn Near Everything..........
It's Great for covering Gauge Faces, or Decals, Or Etc............
