Have the LU apart and housing is empty, so figured this would be a great time to repaint it. Rest of motor above waterline is in VG shape.

Am up to speed on painting and have the zinc chromate primer in hand.

What I am looking for are on some good tips and practices for prepping the castings.

Thanks in advance.

(not sure if it matters, but it is a 6HP 1975 vintage)

Well with the zinc chromate you are really ready to get started. Of course the usual sanding down and fairing all the nicks out as well. And then on all the bare aluminum, dust the zinc chromate on to those areas. If doesn't need a total sheet coverage but a mere dusting of that stuff. Then I personally would use a sandable primer next. And that can be most anything you would normally use for most any metal type paint finish. After the primer cures, again go over it with some 400 grit sanding. Dust it off using either a tack rag or if the primer can handle it, Lacquer Thinner or even Acetone. Now you're ready for the color. Not sure what paint you have picked out. Or even if you are spraying the finish or brushing the finish. Again your choice. I like to spray on my colors. Spray a few light coats rather then one heavy coat that would probably run if you tried to do that. After you've covered the project and are satisfied. You can either stop there and enjoy. or apply a clear coat on top of it. Again your choice. Great response. Thanks.
My local dealer has a spray can top coat of the colour I need....or at least close enough.
What I have already is a zinc chromate primer....the instructions are for a couple of light coats and then top coat.

Is that a problem?
