I am repacking the bearing on my 1 season trailer.
To remove the old grease from the bearing, is it ok to wash the bearing with gasoline and let it dry overnite or just palm the old grease with new one.

Alex, just did mine today. Yes, get out all that old grease. I use gasoline as a solvent as well and it works fine. Just hold off on the cigar and beer till you're done.

Re: repacking bearing

u want to clean out all the old grease then inspect the inside race of the bearing every bearing has an inside race(part of the bearing) and outside race (in the hubs)no 1 ever checks the inside race of the bearings but i have seen them go bad just like outside races do.also when greasing the bearings here is a little trick that works great. use rubber gloves and when u are done packing the bearing take the glove off over the bearing so that the bearing is inside the glove. this way u are clean and so is the repacked bearing. i always do this incase i dont have time to get everything back together.so i know my newly packed bearings will stay clean untill i need them.

I would use mineral spirits instead of gasoline. Make sure that you blow out the bearings with compressed air to get the grit inside that you can't see.

Also I would put a set of Bearing Buddies on the hub when you are done. If kept serviced these eliminate the need for pulling the bearings annually. I just finished a redo of my ten year old twin axle trailer that gets submerged in salt water every launch and retrieval. I had never checked the bearings except to check the hubs for being hot. I had to replace only two of the eight bearings. For those two there was minor pitting.

I've never seen one of those vox, how do you use it?
As far as cleaning goes, I've always used kerosene. Not AS bad as gasoline.
Speaking of bearings I really need to do mine. I just bought my boat & haven't even checked them & have been out twice. Previous owner said they were recently done, but who knows.
I guess I have something ELSE to do today :)
