Hello all,
I am a novice boat user, so my information may be lacking somewhat, but I have 2 current problems; Boat Info: 1979 Renken model 995 120hp mercruiser, closed cooling system.
1. Carb adjustments, I am having a very difficult time maintaining idle rpms, and I am assuming, I need to be somehwere in the 1200rpm range when in idle? The 2 screws on the bottom of the carb, have been adjusted in and out so much, I don't even know where to have them anymore. If I turn these 2 screws fully closed, how many turns out should be ok? Or at what point do I start?
2.When engine is running, and I engage the outdrive, it only works in foward, once I go to reverse it dies. Does the outdrive need to be lowered in order to engage reverse?(It is in the full raised position, as I do not have the clearence to fully lower the drive.)

Idle Air screws should be run in, then backed out 1 1/2 turns to Start........ Idle Should be 600/750RPMs.........
(You Probably need a Carb Rebuild)

Running the motor with the drive in the Full Up position will Destroy the U-joints........About 1/2 way up is the limit.........
The stalling going into reverse is a Classic Syptom of a Failed Lower Shift Cable...........

Bondo,
Thanks, I did some further looking as well, and as far as the shift cable goes, I agree. From what I saw on that subject, I may need to examine the shift bracket assembly as well. The carb, I just did a rebuild on, I just didnt know where the idle point was(rpm wise) given the age of the unit overall, I had thought it was going to be higher. And thank you for the 411 as far as the position of the outdrive goes.
