Any tips on removing the upper spanner nut on the upper drive (by the u-joints) without the wrench?

I think somebody tried to do that on another boat I had. The nut had 1 broken "fin" but with spanner I could remove it.

It's possible to get it off with a large punch and hammer but you will need the tool to get it back on and torqued properly.
If you just want it off to change the ujoints you can grind the a couple of spots on the nut remove the ujoints.

I have a 1994 mercruiser 4.3 liter and I’m replacing the seals on the lower unit however when I took the unit off the spanner nut is missing all of the teeth so the spanner nut wrench won’t work. Does anyone have any ideas to remove this without damaging the housing?

Make your own post. This one is only four years old.
