Removing Throttle Handle Commander 3000?

Hello Boaters—I’ve got a simple question regarding taking off a throttle handle to replace the trim switch. I think I have a Commander 3000 and this is on a 1991 SeaRay 185 BR. I placed the throttle handle in the forward position and attempted to remove the throttle button. I was expecting the throttle button to be one piece based on information I’ve searched, but mine looks to be two (see photo). My questions: what is the correct order to move forward? Do I pull out the throttle button stem with a pliers next? Or do I need to loosen the set screw first and then pull out the throttle button stem? Do I need to loosen the set screw to remove the handle (obviously after loosening the handle nut)? Sorry, I just didn’t want to break anything this old. I do have a new backup throttle button (822212T) on hand, but not sure if this is the exact replacement to the two piece stem I have. Appreciate any feedback and suggestions to get the handle off. Thank you!--Mark

Thank you! It really does appear to be two pieces as nothing snapped when I carefully tried removing it with a hook tool. I actually placed it back in and is working again. Seemed to be four plastic fins that held the cap in place on the stem, but would have to look again. In any event, thank you for the link to the schematics! Sounds like I just need to pull out the stem with a little more force then...

post a full pic of the control box, it does not look like a 3000 series

Thank you for inquiring. Attached is a picture of the full handle assembly. Looks to be QuickSilver. Behind wall (no pic) looks to be a pear-shaped body housing the gears etc. Do you know the model? Still curious if I have the correct throttle button as a replacement (822212T) should I totally wreck it trying to remove it....

Thank you! I will take a deeper look at it and carefully try to remove some parts, but probably won't get to that for a week or so...
