Remove driveshaft nut. Remove driveshaft. Shifter dog comes out with propshaft.

your probably right but i have no idea where the nut is i don't see any nuts but i could be missing something. i looked at the diagram of the motor and don't see this nut your talking about. this has been one heck of a fix nothing simple about fixing a outboard motor.

see item #35 in diagram it is very thin on mine and you have to reach into bearing carrier area (after bearing carrier is removed) to get at it with BOX END wrench(this nut is easy to round over and should never be reused get a new one). Also holding the flywheel from rotating while loosing this drive shaft nut is not easy. I took a scrap crankshaft and cut a section of the splined end off and welded a nut to the end to make an adapter to put a rachet and socket onto.

You have to remove drive shaft first to get prop shaft out.
Do you have gearcase removed from motor?
The pinion gear is still attached to a broken section of the drive shaft?
You have to remove the shift rod (unscrew)

I may be wrong but I thought he said the d/s broke right above the pinion gear. Then it's a bear to get out. But it can be done.

Yow! You're not wrong Boobie. I missed that completely. Any time I ran into that situation, I ended up making a specialty designed chisel to get the nut cut away, then used a large screwdriver tip as a spacer wedge between the dog and the driveshaft threads, after which a sharp upward rap to the propshaft released the threaded portion of the driveshaft from the pinion.

Go the chisel route. It has always worked for me.

Re: removing the prop shaft help

Try this. Put the g/c in fwd gear, put the correct wrench on the pinion nut and hold it. Then rotate the prop shaft counter-clockwise with either a pipe wrench or the prop put on backwards. If you get it broke loose use, leave the nut partially on, wedge a big screw driver between the pinion nut and the shift dog and give the prop shaft a good wrap in the up position. This drives the d/s out of the pinion gear.

Re: removing the prop shaft help

Glad to have helped you out. Done quite a few of them that way. On the first one tho', it took a few Miller Lites before the light bulb went on. LOL.
