top half of the steering wheel has collapsed so need to replace it. the problem is that i've tried undoing 2 of the 6 screws that hold the wheel on and the allen key has just spun in the head. guessing there all gonna be like this. am i gonna have to drill out the screws or is worth trying to soak the remaining screws and try and work them loose??????? how far into the steering collum are the screws likely to go???

Re: removing steering wheel

On my steering wheel only one of the eight or so screws on it does anything. The screw just holds on a cap that covers a nut. Simply hold the wheel and loosen the nut. The wheel sits on a bolt that has a key in it. Be careful not to loose the key.

As AJ said once you get the cap off the single nut holds the wheel on. Loosen the nut until it is up just past the top of the steering shaft, pull up on the steering wheel with 1 hand, and smack the nut sharp with a hammer with the other hand to release the wheel from the shaft taper.

i've pulled of the mariah sticker in the middle of the wheel and its just plastic, for the mariah badge to stick to, think the 6 screws are doing the holding

Re: removing steering wheel

Unless you have some sort of "special" British steering wheel, I'm thinking that the screws you are looking at are just holding a cover on. On my Teleflex steering wheel there were a bunch of "screws" which were just fake props and 1 real screw that held on a plastic cap which covers the real nut that holds the steering wheel on a tapered threaded shaft. Some of the plastic covers snap on and pry off, some are held on with 1 or more screws. Go to the Iboats Mega Mall at the top of this web page and do a search for "steering wheel". Every one shown is held on by a nut on a tapered shaft but you can't see it because of cosmetic covers.

When ytou get the covert off back the nut off till its even with the top of the threads. then pulling top with hands and bottom with knee hit the nut with a hammer. Off the wgeel will pop.
