removing steering cable

I have a 5.7L (350ci) Mercruiser with what I think is a frozen steering cable. I am attempting to remove the cable , but the radiator reservoir and heat exchanger are mounted on the rear of the engine right above the clevis pin on the end of the cable with not enough room to lift the clevis pin out. My first instinct is to pull the heat exchanger, but that would involve removing the u-bolts holding it in place (hard to get at) and disconnecting the hoses on the underside (REALLY hard to get at).......Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Pulling the engine is easier. The heat exchanger should be more accessable .U bolts and hoses.

Re: removing steering cable

I wouldn't need to get access to the u-bolts and clamps if I pulled the motor as I only need about an inch of clearance to get the clevis pin out.......was kinda hoping for a little less drastic solution
